There were estimated to be at least 800,000 female Soviet combat soldiers during WWII. Here are the profiles of four:

Людмила Михайловна Павличенко :: Lyudmila Mikhailivna Pavlichenko
Born in Ukraine. Sniper credited with 309 kills. Masters degree in history. Chose combat over nursing. First Soviet citizen received on state visit by a U.S. president. Ultimately rising to rank of major, she was awarded both the Gold Star and Hero of the Soviet Union.

Ни́на Алексе́евна Лобко́вская :: Nina Alexeyevna Lobkovskaya
Born in Siberia. Sniper. Fought with honor as lieutenant commander of an all female company in the Battle of Berlin.

Зинаида Мартыновна Портнова :: Zinaida Martynovna Portnova
Born in Leningrad. While visiting aunt in Belarus was trapped behind advancing German lines. Became partisan after witnessing invading troops beat her grandmother while taking the family's cattle. Participated in acts of sabotage including poisoning estimated to have killed 100 Nazi soldiers. Eventually captured and killed at age 17. Posthumously awarded Hero of the Soviet Union and Order of Lenin.

Зо́я Анато́льевна Космодемья́нская :: Zoya Anatolyevna Kosmodemyanskaya
First woman awarded Hero of the Soviet Union during World War II. Moscow student, literary buff, music fan and idealist who volunteered for a partisan unit. Crossed front line into occupied territory to carry out sabotage missions mining roads and cutting communications lines. After burning parts of the village Petrischevo where Nazi cavalry was stationed she was captured. Tortured, she refused to divulge any information about comrades and gave her own name falsely as "Tanya". Hanged at age 18 on November 29, 1941 she is reported to have spoken these final words "There are two hundred million of us. You can't hang us all". Her body was left rotting on display for several weeks.
